El Niño is coming. Move this waste. (Washington Post)

On October 8th, CBG's Board Chair, Jack Miles, submitted an op-ed to the Washington Post. You can read it below or click on this link.

"El Niño is coming. Move this waste.

Regarding the Oct. 6 news article “How a record-breaking El Niño could supercharge California’s winter storms”:

Beachfront homeowners in California are increasingly alarmed at the prospect of El Niño possibly washing away their homes. But millions more Californians fear that El Niño will wash away high-level radioactive waste stored just feet from the waterline at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, located between Los Angeles and San Diego. The power plant is shut down, but the waste remains.

What will happen to it if the beach that holds it in place goes away? Mass evacuation of the millions of people who live in the shadow of San Onofre is logistically impossible. What is possible is for Southern California Edison to move the waste to locally available higher ground. The odds of the worst happening are unknowable, but why gamble when the stakes are so fearfully high?
