2024 Temple Beth El Woman of Valor Laura Giges. The award is inspired by the exemplary family and community building values of Coonerty Protti’s late mother Candy Issenman Coonerty. Candy’s legacy of community activity included serving as President of Temple Beth El where she also helped found the Jewish Cultural Festival, and leadership roles in groups such as Tandy Beal & Company, Friends of the UC Santa Cruz Library, and Santa Cruz Hillel. Laura grew up in New York in a Reform Jewish family. From nursery school at the 92nd Street Y to Jewish summer camps, she was steeped in the cultural values of Judaism. At camp in the late 60’s, she was deeply influenced by the anti-war activism of the counselors and the importance of fighting for social justice. Laura’s Grandma Belle also had a huge impact on Laura’s value system. Grandma Belle was a firm believer in giving back to community (Fight for Sight, Lions Club, and Hadassah, to name of few of her many volunteer efforts) and in gifts of tzedakah. Laura was Bat Mitzvah in 1970. However, as a young feminist, she drifted away from mainstream Judaism, considering it to be sexist and patriarchal. Laura moved to Santa Cruz to go to UCSC and graduated in 1978 with a degree in Women’s Studies and Political Economy. She found her way back to Judaism through the vibrant Feminist Jewish Women’s Movement in the 1980’s. Laura first became active in the Santa Cruz community in the mid-1970s. She was one of the early members of the Santa Cruz Women’s Health Collective which brought feminist health care, abortion services and education to the community. In the mid 80’s, deeply affected by the impact of AIDS on her friendships and larger community, Laura volunteered for the Santa Cruz AIDS project. As one of the first women to work with SCAP, she focused on HIV issues for women, as well as education and support for community members with HIV/AIDS. Laura’s other community involvements included serving on the Board of Familia Center, and acting as community educator/trainer on LGBT and AIDS/HIV issues to local groups including Santa Cruz High School, Santa Cruz Police, and UCSC students. Laura joined Temple Beth El in 1989. She was inspired by Rabbi Rick’s heartfelt funeral service for a friend who died of AIDS, and wanted to be a part of this congregation. In the 1990’s at TBE, she, along with two friends, offered annual presentations to Temple School on their experiences as LGBT Jews. In 1993 she was one of the founders of Twice Blessed, TBE’s LGBT outreach group. In 2003 Laura joined TBE’s Finance Committee, on which she has served continuously to this date. She helped design TBE’s accounting system, trained bookkeepers, assisted with audits, worked on financial reporting and helped secure Pandemic Relief grants during Covid. Laura started her own bookkeeping business in 1985. Over the last 40 years, as an Advanced QuickBooks ProAdvisor she has worked with over 400 business and non-profits in the Santa Cruz Community. Laura is blessed with a much beloved husband, Jon Edelbaum, and a long-term community of dear friends in Santa Cruz. She is grateful to have shared Santa Cruz with her brother Bob since their move together in 1976, and to have her treasured mother Devera Black now living here as well.
